A School Readiness Assessment gathers information to help determine whether a child is "ready" to start Prep. This information helps parents to decide whether it is best for their child to repeat another year of kindergarten, or to apply for minimum age exemption for early entry to school.

To be eligible to attend school in Victoria, a child must turn 5 years of age by 30 April in the year they start school. If a parent seeks to enrol their child in a Victorian government school at a younger age, they need to provide evidence that their child possesses suitable academic ability, and it is in the child's best interests to attend a government school.

Assessment will measure:

• cognitive skills (IQ)

• academic skills (early numeracy and literacy)

• communication skills

• play and socialisation skills

• emotional regulation skills

• attention and concentration

• self-care skills

• fine-motor and gross-motor skills
