Cognitive Assessment

Our assessment clinic offers cognitive assessments for children and adolescents, and diagnose intellectual developmental disorder (intellectual disability).

A cognitive assessment (also known as an IQ test), measures thinking and problem-solving skills. It provides information on a child's overall intelligence, and level of skill across different areas of cognitive functioning, including: verbal comprehension skills, visual spatial skills, fluid reasoning ability, working memory, and processing speed.

A cognitive assessment is used to:

  • identify cognitive strengths and weaknesses

  • identify learning difficulties

  • identify giftedness

  • understand learning potential

  • diagnose Intellectual Disability

  • support applications for extra time on exams

  • support applications for school funding and NDIS funding

  • help educators develop individualised learning plans

Intellectual Disability:

Intellectual disability, now referred to as intellectual developmental disorder (IDD) in the DSM-5-TR, is characterised by significantly delayed cognitive functioning and adaptive functioning. The onset of these delays first appear in early childhood. For a diagnosis of Intellectual Disability both a cognitive assessment, and an adaptive behaviour assessment, are required.

Symptoms of delayed cognitive functioning include: difficulties with reasoning, problem solving, planning, abstract thinking, judgment, short-term memory, academic learning, and learning from experience.

Symptoms of delayed adaptive functioning include: difficulties with social communication, social participation, emotional regulation, behaviour, reading social cues, immaturity, self-care (dressing, eating, toileting, hygiene), motor skills.
